The Visual Display of Quantitative Information. My Christmas present from Dad finally got in at the book store, and he handed it to me as soon as we were off the plane. This part of Tufte's thesis is delivered in several parts. Edward Tufte: Books – The Visual Display of Quantitative Information. Subsequent chapters provide great advice for developing great graphics. Since I went to the lecture for work, this is on my work non-fiction list. Continuing with my review of Tufte's “The Visual Display of Quantitative Information”, I turn my attention to an adapted theory of graphics. I'm using one of my favorite data sets today to explore a particular challenge: How do you clearly illustrate meaning in data that don't have intrinsic meaning? Andrew Gelman (Stats & Poli Sci; Columbia), who delivered a wonderful paper at the recent CELS conference, followed up with a recent post on graphical communication for empirical legal scholarship. See the first 50 pages of The Visual Display of Quantitative Information for examples of the former and the next 30 pages for examples of the latter.
